The Graphs
A baby born today won’t join the workforce for two decades
Global fertility decline threatens economic growth across major economies this century. Developed nations and China face immediate workforce shrinkage, while emerging markets must rapidly develop before aging accelerates.
Median age of U.S. homebuyers
If you want to understand what the next decade entails for incoming homebuyers, look at this chart:
In contrast: More housing supply actually lowers rents:
The top 10 most valuable companies
The corporate landscape has transformed radically in 20 years, with only one company remaining in the top ten most valuable list, while 2025’s leaders are worth roughly ten times their 2005 predecessors.
This dramatic reshuffling stems from the rise of high-growth “arenas” — industries defined by intense competition, massive rewards for winners, but equally high risks of being displaced. The new scale of success reflects a winner-takes-more dynamic in these arena-based markets.
Is 2026 the year for self-driving cars?
Waymo sits at a $100B valuation — 280x its revenue — betting that long-term dominance in ride-hailing will justify the premium. The self-driving company is currently operating and testing in 25 U.S. metro areas.
How to become wealthy
A look at asset distributions, based on net worth tiers:
A new role is potentially emerging; Head of Storytelling
Brands trying to wrest greater control of the narratives are asking for ‘storytelling’ skill sets. As we enter this new media era, companies are increasingly hiring storytellers to act as narrators.
Some companies are already jumping in — cybersecurity startup Vanta is hiring a Head of Storytelling with compensation around USD $274K.
This is in conjunction with a recent piece we published on The New Media (our #5 most read piece this year).
General AI traffic share
AI market dynamics are unprecedented: massive capital and power requirements, explosive consumer adoption, transformative economic impact, and global competition — all converging at once.
SpaceX IPO
Elon Musk has confirmed SpaceX plans to go public in 2026, targeting a $1.5 trillion valuation that could raise over $30 billion — potentially making it history’s largest IPO, surpassing Saudi Aramco’s 2019 record of $29.4 billion.
Small business owners are becoming younger
Each year, Guidant reaches out to the resilient, hardworking small business owners of America. We learn who they are, what their lives as small business owners are like, what their plans for the future are, and how their business has weathered current affairs. Together, this information makes up the Small Business Trends report.
Unemployed Americans with 4-year college degrees now make up a record 25.3% of total unemployment.
Unemployment among college graduates has doubled since 2008, with 1.9 million degree holders now jobless. Young adults aged 20-24 face a 9.2% unemployment rate — the highest since May 2021 and a year-over-year jump of 2.2 points typically only seen during recessions, signaling widespread labor market deterioration across all education levels.
October 2025 saw 153,074 layoffs — the worst month in 22 years and 175% higher than the previous October
With profitable giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Intel cutting thousands while posting record earnings. Companies now use “AI efficiency” as their scapegoat instead of consultants, though Goldman Sachs found only 11% openly admit AI drives cuts, while the World Economic Forum predicts 41% of employers will reduce workforces due to AI within five years.
With 1.1 million Americans laid off through October 2025 and tech workers hit hardest at 141,159 cuts, the message is clear: corporate loyalty is dead, and job security exists only when you own your income stream. The solution isn’t waiting for stability—it’s building something they can’t take away with a Zoom call.
We are living longer
Life expectancy has increased over the last 2 centuries. Figure 1.7: trend in life expectancy - 1838 to 2022.
Life expectancy at birth (years), by sex, England and Wales, between 1838 and 2020 to 2022. From 1910 onwards 3-year aggregate data is plotted against the mid-point in the range. For earlier time periods ranges are inconsistent but are plotted against the mid-point in the range.
Will 2026 be the blockbuster year for IPOs?
SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, and Anduril are all expected to IPO at some stage and there are many others in the making. Huge amounts of capital will be unlocked for investors.
Voice is fast becoming the new interface for efficiency and productivity
It’s cheaper, more effective, and a powerful lever for companies to scale while cutting costs and now startups are building tools that enable:
Enterprises to use AI voices for call centers — no call will go unanswered, and demand can multiply overnight.
Companies to conduct interviews and qualify sales leads through natural conversation.
Developers to describe what they want to build — simply by talking.
Consumers to handle daily tasks, from scheduling doctor appointments to chatting with voice companions.
Creators to clone their voices and build digital twins.
Students to learn new languages with lifelike virtual teachers.
And this is just the beginning.
What 2026 really means
Connect the dots across these charts and a clear theme shows up: shrinking populations, AI speeding ahead, and capital concentrating faster than ever. That combination could create one of the biggest wealth shifts we’ve seen in modern history.
Here’s what the data is saying. As countries age, they can’t rely on labor-driven growth — automation has to fill the gap. AI isn’t just replacing jobs, it’s consolidating power.
While jobs tighten, an IPO wave is coming. SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, Anduril — together they could unlock billions in liquidity. But that capital won’t flow to salaries. It flows to equity holders — founders, investors, builders. A college degree used to mean stability. Today, degree holders make up 25.3% of the unemployed. The corporate ladder can disappear with one Zoom call.
This is the turning point: Voice-first interfaces bring AI to everyone. Self-driving cars are on the edge of reshaping trillion-dollar industries. Homebuyers who understand supply dynamics win however ownership isn’t a priority as much anymore for younger consumers.
A big thank you for being part of our community throughout 2025 — we can’t wait to see you in 2026! 🙏
