Generation Z

Gen Z comprises 25% of the global population, giving them significant influence over how we shop, consume information, adopt new apps, and shape the future of work.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been reflecting on how Generation Z is poised to influence this year, setting new trends and building upon existing ones.

Throughout this week’s edition, a number of Gen Z trends are clear:

  • IRL (in real life connections) are back.

  • Health is a major focus. Fewer alcoholic drinks and healthier alternatives.

  • Home ownership is becoming less important.

  • 93% hope to have long-term relationships.

  • Optimistic about the economy right now.

  • Purchasing from sustainability-focused brands.

Let’s explore the latest trends that Generation Z is driving forward.

Spending power

They have $450 billion in spending power.

The Economy

60% are optimistic about the economy right now.

Voting

55% are less inclined toward civic engagement like voting.

The future of work…

87% believe working from home outweighs the perks of working in-office full-time.

Why?

  • Save time and money on commuting.

  • Spending less on dining out during lunch breaks.

  • Fewer distractions and interruptions from co-workers.

To attract the next generation of co-workers, employers should foster a high level of trust and ensure that remote work arrangements are both effective and genuinely productive.

Stable full-time employment

Generation Z currently makes up 20% of the labor market with 74% dreaming of having stable full-time employment.

On top of this, becoming business owners or creators is a preferred career choice for many post-education.

Health

66% prioritize mental health over physical health.

Exploring the world

54% have a desire to explore the world.

The Renting Generation

31% are open to renting forever.

Renting in highly developed cities is becoming increasingly expensive, with costs in some areas spiraling out of control. For instance, one-bedroom in a shared apartment in London ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 per month, while in New York, monthly rents often start at $4,000. Data shows that Generation Z spends on average 35% of their income on rent.

If this trend continues, we anticipate that a significant portion of this generation will consider leaving their native countries in search of more affordable living options.

Sorry Elon…

Alcohol

52% of Generation Z are alcohol-free as they just don’t want to consume it. This trend will most likely continue to rise.

Relationships

With the resurgence of IRL experiences among Gen Z—93% hope to have a stable long-term relationship.
